Skeet Shooting

Skeet Shooting is a sport that involves a clay target being shot out from a trap to simulate the flight of a bird. Skeet Shooting is the name given to a group of disciplines of Clay Pigeon Shooting. There are several different disciplines that come under Clay Pigeon Shooting, each with different rules and set ups. Skeet Shooting originally started in the United States in the 1920s, however the sport has grown more popular in the UK and Europe.

What is Skeet Shooting?

Skeet Shooting is where one or two targets are shot from two trap houses that are placed 40 meters apart. The shooter must stand in position and call out for the targets. The targets are then shot out from the traps and the challenge is for the shooter to shoot the targets from the various directions and positions. In Skeet Shooting there are 7 shooting positions to shoot from. These positions are placed along a semicircular arc. The idea being to test a shooters skills of shooting from different angles.

Disciplines

The key disciplines in Skeet Shooting are:

  • Olympic skeet
  • American (NSSA) skeet
  • English skeet

Each of these disciplines of Skeet Shooting have different rules and set ups. Essentially, Olympic skeet is the most difficult form and English skeet is a modified version to make the sport more accessible.

Olympic skeet involves a random delay between when the shooter calls out and when the targets are fired and the gun buttsock needs to he held level with mid-torso until the target appears. So the shooter needs to be really focused and react quickly.

American Skeet is very similar to Olympic skeet but there is no delay between when the target is fired and when the shooter calls out. Also shooters may choose to start with their gun held up in position ready to shoot.

English skeet is an easier version of the previous two disciplines as it was recognised those disciplines were out of reach of many shooters. This is why English skeet is the most popular form of skeet shooting as shooters of all experience levels are able to take part.
